Paul Bowles letters to Ned Leavitt and six typescript manuscripts

Abstract

This collection consists of ninety-three letters from American expatriate author and composer Paul Bowles to his literary agent at the William Morris Agency, Ned Leavitt, and six typescript manuscripts Bowles sent to the William Morris Agency, all created between 1975 and 1992. There are also six letters written by Bowles to other individuals and three letters written to Leavitt by individuals collaborating on work with Bowles.

Born on February 19, 1902, in Saint Paul, Minnesota, Kay Boyle has been known for her work and achievements as a poet, short story writer, novelist, journalist, teacher, and political activist. One of the most prominent American expatriates during the 1920s and 1930s, much of Kay Boyle’s work reflects the influences of that literary circle.

Hippolyte Dussauce papers

Abstract

The Hippolyte Dussauce Papers reflect the life and work of the chemist during the years of 1860-1869. The papers include letters of inquiry from chemists, inventors, druggists and others to Dussauce for formulae and advice. Several copy books kept by Dussauce reflect his responses to some of these inquiries. The correspondence section also contains the letters of Henry Carey Baird, Dussauce's publisher, to Dussauce.

The En Passant Archive, spanning the dates 1970 – 1983, is the archive of the little poetry magazine En Passant, edited by James Costello in Wilmington, Delaware. The 1.3 linear feet of material in the collection consists of letters from contributors, administrative correspondence, little magazines, including twelve issues of En Passant, and the manuscripts of most of the thirteen issues of the magazine published between 1975 and 1983.

The archive of the little magazine Pagany: a native quarterly consists of 5.5 linear feet of material, which spans the dates 1925–1970, with the bulk of the material dating from 1929 to 1933. The collection includes founder and editor Richard Johns's personal papers and all known surviving material related to the publication of Pagany (some letters and manuscript were destroyed in a 1932 fire or stolen from Johns's car the same year).
